EUGENE FREDRICK ABELN, 76, of Salisbury died April 11, 2008 at Moberly Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Eugene was born May 16, 1931 in Salisbury, MO the son of Bernard and Josephine (Schuette) Abeln. He married Ruth Ann Boss on February 15, 1958 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Eugene was a lifelong area resident. He attended the Washington School. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and saw 54 days of actual combat. He was on duty when the Peace Treaty was signed. After his honorable discharge Eugene farmed, worked at the Moberly Auction, Brunswick Livestock Yard, New Cambria Livestock Yard and the Brookfield Livestock yard, as well as custom farming. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salisbury, the Salisbury American Legion Post # 391, and the Cleve Iman Memorial VFW Post #4926. He served on the St. Joseph Cemetery Board, Chariton County Mutual Insurance Board, St. Joe Parish Council, a 4 H Leader, and was Wayland Township assessor.

Eugene is survived by his wife Ruth of the home; four daughter’s Anna Tully and husband Dave of Lathrop, MO, Nancy Hopper and husband Steven of Columbus, TX, Peggy Schmit and husband Ted of Moberly, MO, Josephine “Jay” Elson and husband Daryl of Salisbury; a son Robert Abeln and wife Rose of Salisbury; two sisters Margaret Wagner and husband Clarence of Rosenburg, TX, Helen Taylor and husband Roy of Grain Valley, MO; twelve grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. His parents; brothers Benny Abeln, Herman Abeln, Albert Abeln, two infant brothers; sisters Mary Murtha, Bernadine Ammons, Lucille Emmerich, Clara Mae Yung Hanke; and three nephews preceded him in death.

Visitation is Sunday, April 13th from 5-8:00 a.m. with a 7:30 Rosary at the Summerville Funeral Home in Salisbury. Mass of Christian Burial is Monday, April 14th at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salisbury with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Cemetery Association.
