COTTIE R WINKLER, 73, of Moberly formerly of Huntsville died March 2, 2009 at Moberly Regional Medical Center. A memorial gathering with full military honors will be held 2:30 PM Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. There will be no visitation.  Memorials can be made to the Westran Alumni Association or to the American Cancer Society.

Cottie was born January 15, 1936 in Huntsville, Missouri to Walter Edward and Martha Elizabeth Leathers Winkler. He Married Myra Turchie on May 7, 1957 in Huntsville.  Survivors include his wife; one brother Donnie Winkler (Juanita) of Moberly; two sister-in-laws Della Potter (Steve) of Kansas City, MO; Rosalie Trenago (Jim) of Moberly; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.  Mr. Winkler was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers; 3 sisters; and a infant brother and sister.

Cottie was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Huntsville. He was a life long member of the NRA. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955- 1975.  He retired as a Chief Petty Officer and was in the Medical Corps. He completed Boot Camp in Great Lakes, IL. He was a member of the original crew of USS Saratoga (CVA-60.) At the time it was the world’s largest aircraft carrier. Cottie served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War. During Cottie’s naval career, he served in all three Marine Corps divisions in a medical capacity. While at Camp Pendleton, he retired from the Navy with 21 years of service.
